In addition to barrel racing she also does breakaway (a calf breaking a rope away that's tied to the saddle horn) and previously has competed in goat-tying, pole bending and other "gaming" events.

A couple of days rest for horse and rider, then it's back to the same thing all over again.Ī recent five-day road trip took her to four rodeos in Oregon and Idaho, where she faced some of the top rodeo riders in the country. Professional and amateur rodeo circuit riding sends the competitors off on a tough, grueling schedule of long road trips towing a horse trailer for hard-riding, extended weekends. These days, Dyami's dream is coming true, but not without a toll. While watching the barrel racers, she told her mother she planned to compete in this event professionally some day. Her mother, Loyes Drury, says Dyami's true competitive spirit was aroused when she went to the Kitsap County Fair at age 12. She says Ryan also knew they were a perfect match and was thrilled when she let her have 'Kota. "I've been a member there for the past six years and do most of my practice there for barrel racing and the other events I do," Drury says.īut in 2001 she met her horse soulmate, 'Kota, through Stephanie Ryan, another Poulsbo riding instructor. She continued riding and soon entered competition, but because she needed an arena for practice she joined Silver Spur Club. "It doesn't matter which breed the horse is -you have to find one who has a heart for this, is smart, and loves it as much as you do."ĭrury's love affair with horses began at age 6 when she took riding lessons for five years with Poulsbo instructor Ruhl Johnson.

"'Kota and I must think and work as one," Drury says. Turning so quickly they are nearly parallel to the ground, she and 'Kota then must plunge straight ahead, full-bore, back to the start line. Riding in a cloverleaf pattern, it's off at break-neck speed to the second barrel 90 feet away then tearing over to a third barrel another 105 feet away. The 19-year-old woman from Kingston knows they must concen-trate solely on whipping around the first barrel as fast as they can. The roar of the big crowd increases as she kicks 'Kota into a full gallop. Lone figures in a huge rodeo arena, professional barrel racer Dyami Drury and her 8-year-old paint horse, 'Kota, seem unaware of the bright lights beaming down on them. Dyami Drury recently rode 'Kota, her paint barrel-racing horse, at Silver Spur Club.
